Mechanism of Action

Black-tea polyphenols are formed through oxidative polymerisation of catechins during fermentation, generating theaflavins and thearubigins --- unique antioxidant structures absent in green tea. (1) Theaflavin benzotropolone structures form stable free-radical-scavenging complexes through a distinct chemistry from EGCG\'s phenolic antioxidant activity. (2) Gut-microbiome modulation --- black-tea polyphenols show strong prebiotic activity in the colon, selectively promoting Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while inhibiting Clostridium, explaining much of the observed cardiovascular and metabolic benefit. (3) ACE inhibition --- theaflavins inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, contributing to the well-documented blood-pressure-lowering effects of regular black-tea consumption.

Top 3 Applications

1. Nutraceuticals / Cardiovascular --- Cholesterol Management & Cardiovascular Risk Reduction

Meta-analyses confirm black-tea polyphenol supplementation reduces total and LDL cholesterol and improves blood pressure. Theaflavin-standardised extract is used in cardiovascular-health supplements and is particularly suited to older demographics or markets where black-tea heritage resonates strongly

2.Functional Foods / Gut Health --- Prebiotic Fortification in Beverages & Foods

The strong prebiotic activity of black-tea polyphenols in the colon makes this extract a differentiated functional-food ingredient for gut-health positioning, where the gut-microbiome narrative is preferred over metabolic claims.

3. Personal Care / Cosmeceuticals --- Anti-Aging, Brightening & Barrier Repair

Theaflavins demonstrate anti-tyrosinase activity (brightening), anti-glycation properties (anti-aging), and barrier-strengthening effects in keratinocyte models. Used in premium anti-aging and dark-spot formulations alongside green-tea EGCG for complementary polyphenol spectrum.
